Why should I join?
Ultimate frisbee is a great way to get involved during college and do something which can last a lifetime. Ultimate is a great way to meet new people in a fun and competitive way. One of the nicest things about playing with UNO is the great sports club program UNO has. Campus Recreation pays for all the bids for the tournaments, making ultimate less expensive and more accessible to students.
How do I play for UNO?
You must be a student enrolled at the University of Nebraska at Omaha to play. There are also requirements through Campus Rec each player needs to fulfill. These include dues ($20/semester), a sports physical, and a baseline concussion test done through the campus Injury Prevention and Care Center (this test is free to all sport club members).
What do I need to play? Do I need experience to play?
For practice all you will need is cleats, a white shirt, dark shirt, and water, along with a willingness to learn and get better.
Do I need experience to play?
Absolutely not, anyone is welcome to come out and give it a shot. We will work with you to teach you everything about the game you will need to know, like throwing, cutting, defense positioning, and many more.
Are there tryouts?
No, we do not have tryouts for the club. If you are willing to come and put in the time to and work then you will be guaranteed to get a bunch of playing time.
What is the time commitment?
We typically aim for two practices a week, they are always in the evening to try and avoid conflicts with classes. Players are strongly encouraged to come to both practices, but it is understandable to not make it because of school. Most improvement is shown throughout the year by those who come to practice on a regular basis. Practice times and locations will be announced at the beginning of each semester. Tournaments are usually once a month during each semester and will always be on the weekends, with everyone leaving Friday evening and returning Sunday evening. These are designed so that students will not have to miss classes to attend the tournaments. Many students take their homework on the road with them and complete assignments during the drive, effectively balancing school and playing.
How much will this cost me?
At the beginning of each semester each player must submit club dues, which are $30. Also each member is required to have a sports physical done before they can play with the club, the cost of this will vary insurance to insurance. Physicals can also be done at the Student Health Center for around $25. As for tournaments, the only costs are gas, lodging, and food. On occasion we will camp at a tournament depending on location and time of year. Average trips can cost anywhere from $50-$75 for the weekend, depending on how far away the tournament is. Campus Recreation helps pay all the bids for the tournaments we go to, helping keep the cost much lower than what it could be.
Where do we travel to?
Each semester usually consists of around three tournaments, this is the most traveling out of all sport clubs at UNO. These tournaments are located in various cities of the Midwest. Common places for UNO to travel to are: Chicago, Fayetteville, St. Louis, Tulsa, Ames, Grinnell, Lawrence, and Lincoln. We travel to a variety of cities and get to see and do a lot of cool things along the way. Traveling to tournaments in completely optional, but it provides great experience on and off the field and is the favorite part of almost all players.
